The United Kingdom is made up of four constituent countries: England,
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It occupies all of the island
of Great Britain and the northeast part of the island of Ireland, sharing
a land border with the Republic of Ireland. The United Kingdom is bounded
by the Atlantic Ocean.
Population
The
United Kingdom¡¦s population is about 58 million people, the third largest
in the European Union (behind Germany and France). The overall population
density is one of the highest in the world. About a quarter of the population
lives in England¡¦s prosperous south-east. Its official language is
English.
Climate
England
has a temperature climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round. Temperature
rarely falls below -15 ¢XC and will only rise above 34 ¢XC in the height
of the summer. Snowfall can occur in winter and early spring, though it
is not that common away from high ground.

Transport
The transport system in the United Kingdom is well
developed. A radial road network of main roads is centred on London, Edinburgh
and Belfast, whilst, in Great Britain, a motorway network is centred on
Birmingham and London. The National Rail network of 10,072 route miles
in Great Britain and 189 route miles in Northern Ireland carries over
18,000 passenger and 1,000 freight trains daily. Urban rail networks are
also well developed in London and several other cities. Heathrow Airport
is the world's busiest international airport, and the UK has a considerable
network of ports. Coaches are widely used also.
