TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Preparatory Course
TOEFL measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is used in college and university settings. The test is offered via the internet (Internet based test or IBT) once a month. You will be tested on reading listening and structure / writing (your essay rating is based on the writing element of this band.)

CONTENT: AN OVERVIEW
Paper 1 (Reading) – 60-100minites
There are 3-5 passages from academic texts; approximately 700 words long; 12-14 questions per passage. Candidates are expected to be able to read and understand texts taken from magazines, newspapers, leaflets, etc. They should demonstrate a variety of reading skills including skimming, scanning, deduction of meaning from context and selection of relevant information to complete the given task.

Paper 2 (Listening) – 60-90 minutes
There are 4-6 lectures, some with classroom discussion; each 3-5 minutes long. Candidates are expected to understand each text as a whole, gain detailed understanding and appreciate gist and the attitude of the speaker. They must also be able to identify and interpret the context. Texts take the form of announcements, speeches, radio broadcasts, interviews, etc

Paper 3 (Speaking) – 20 minutes
There are 2 tasks to express an opinion on a familiar topic; 4 tasks to speak based on what is read and listened to. The candidates must be able to demonstrate a range of oral skills: interactional, social, transactional, negotiation and collaboration.

Paper 4 (Writing) – 50minites
Candidates are expected to complete 1 task to write based on what is read and listened to and 1 task to support an opinion on a topic.

Lesson Planning:
In class: This course is taught systematically and sequentially. It reviews those topics which will be included in the test such as English reading, writing, grammar, comprehension, listening and speaking. Exam-taking skills will also be taught in order for students to enhance their performance in the exam.

Quizzes and Dictations: In order to ensure the students are capable of applying their knowledge, students will have small quizzes or dictations in every class.

Examination: There will be two mock examinations throughout the course.
