FIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH (FCE) Preparatory Course
FCE is an upper-intermediate level examination
that requires application of all language skills, targeting students
from age of 15. It assesses English language ability at ALTE level
3. It also represents a third step for those wishing to progress
towards the rest of the Cambridge ESOL examinations such as Certificate
in Advanced English (CAE) and Certificate of Proficiency in English
(CPE). It has widespread recognition in commerce and industry. It
is also recognized by some university faculties, colleges and other
institutions as fulfilling English language requirements.

CONTENT: AN OVERVIEW
Paper
1 (Reading) – 1 hour 15 minutes
Candidates are expected to be able to read semi-authentic texts
of various kinds (informative and general interest) and to show
understanding of gist, detail and text structure, and deduce meaning.
Paper
2 (Writing)
– 1 hour 30
minutes
Candidates are
expected to be able to write non-specialized text types such as
letter, articles, reports and compositions for a given purpose and
target reader, covering a range of topics.

3 (Use of English) – 1 hour 15 minutes
Candidates are
expected to be able to demonstrate their knowledge and control of
the language system by completing a number of tasks, some of which
are based on specially written texts.
Paper
4 (Listening) – 40 minutes
Candidates are
provided with short extracts and longer monologues, announcements,
extracts from radio programs, news features, etc., at an intermediate
level. They are expected to be able to show understanding of detail
and gist, and to deduce meaning.

5 (Speaking) – 14 minutes
Candidates are
expected to be able to respond to questions and to interact in conversational
English.
Lesson
Planning:
In class: This course is taught systematically
and sequentially. It reviews those topics which will be included
in the test such as English reading, writing, grammar, comprehension,
listening and speaking. Exam-taking skills will also be taught in
order for students to enhance their performance in the exam.
Quizzes
and Dictations: In
order to ensure the students are capable of applying their knowledge,
students will have small quizzes or dictations in every class.
Examination:
There will be two mock examinations throughout the
course.
