PRELIMINARY ENGLISH TEST (PET) Preparatory Course
Preliminary English Test (PET) offers
a basic qualification in English targeting students from age of
13 to 15. It is also an internationally recognized English language
qualification at ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe)
level 2. It also represents a second step for those wishing to progress
towards the rest of the Cambridge ESOL examinations such as First
Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
and Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). It assesses candidates’
language skills at lower-intermediate level. At this level, learners
should be able to cope linguistically in a range of everyday situations
that require use of English in their own or a foreign country, in
contact with native and non-native speakers of the language.

CONTENT: AN OVERVIEW
Paper
1 (Reading/ Writing) – 1 hour 30 minutes
PET assesses the candidates’ ability to understand the meaning
of written English at word, phrase, sentence, paragraph and whole
text level. It also assesses their ability to produce straightforward
written English, ranging from producing variations on simple sentences
to pieces of continuous text..
Paper
2 (Listening) – 30 minutes
PET assesses
the candidates’ ability to understand dialogues and monologues in
both informal and neutral settings on a range of everyday topics.
Paper
3 (Speaking) – 10-12 minutes
PET assesses
the candidates’ ability to express themselves, to ask and to understand
questions and make appropriate responses, and to talk freely on
matters of personal interest.
Lesson
Planning:
In class: This course is taught systematically
and sequentially. It reviews those topics which will be included
in the test such as English reading, writing, grammar, comprehension,
listening and speaking. Exam-taking skills will also be taught in
order for students to enhance their performance in the exam.
Quizzes and Dictations: In order to ensure the students are capable of applying their knowledge, students will have small quizzes or dictations in every class.
Examination: There will be two mock examinations throughout the course.
